If one of the independent clauses is short, a comma is acceptable (one of the few cases where a comma splice is okay). Definitely not the place for a colon though. In general, it's not a good idea to use colons unless you really know how to use colons. They're tricky.

[MOD] This is the self post only feedback thread. What did you all think? by Wordslinger1919in GetMotivated

[–]nainalerom -3 points-2 points ago

I like the weekend-only links idea. And putting links in self posts works just fine; I don't know why people are complaining. It's just one extra click. Do people really care that much about karma?

Edit: I guess people do.

[Weekly Discussion Thread] Scientists, what is the biggest open question in your field? by fastparticlesin askscience

Sort of, but they used knock-down, not knock out (not sure if the distinction is important to you). Anyway, they found it can affect pluripotency and cell differentiation.

Wow, my dad and brother are both geologists (sedimentology and geomorphology, respectively) but I haven't been that interested in geology, until now. I've never had so many questions about rocks. Do you know of any good reviews on early Earth that might be readable to someone outside the field? I don't know a whole lot about geology, but I have a solid background in physics and chemistry.

Yeah, thanks! It's amazing that it only took about 10 million years to form. That seems like such a short time to me.

Question: I've always been taught that the Earth is 4.5 billion years old, but not much past that. Obviously it didn't just pop into existence. Is that just how old the oldest rock is? Or is there some other way to define when Earth started being Earth?

Is there any possibility that another fundamental force exists, that's just far weaker than gravity and possibly only relevant on the scale of the universe? I thought of this yesterday and it's been bothering me.

Considering rRNA is a type of non-coding RNA, I'd say there's quite a bit of it. Based on your proposed experiment I'm assuming you're more interested in long non-coding RNA (lncRNA). It looks like people are looking into it.

People always give me strange looks when I say I'm afraid of ultracentrifuges. If this was just 30K, I don't even want to know what 150K can do.

For the European parliament vote. They represent 0.63% in the actual Swedish political system, which is not enough to have a member in the parliament.

Yes, they have two seats in the European parliament, but they have none in the Swedish parliament. Pretty sure they got <1% of the vote. But Rickard Falkvinge definitely deserves lots of credit for bringing the voice of the internet into politics.

Indeed. Even though the movement started in Sweden, the German pirate party actually has political clout.

Your grandmother had a daughter (your mother). Your grandmother's mother had a daughter (your grandmother). And so on. Thus, if your mother doesn't have a daughter, she is the first person in her lineage to ever not have a daughter.

Edit: also, none of your ancestors died a virgin ;).

Cannabis Use during Adolescence Affects Brain Regions Associated with Schizophrenia by justsayboomin science

[–]nainalerom 1 point2 points ago

There's actually a lot of research on THC, due to the fact there is a THC-analog pill known as Marinol. It's actually not incredibly effective.

The issue is that cannabis has dozens of psychoactive chemicals, and very few of them other than THC have been studied in-depth.
