Is there another german who finds it weird, reading german words in english texts? by josef4fin germany

[–]guysguy 4 points5 points ago

Reminds me of how one exchange student wanted to convince me that the Einstein is pronounced the way English/American people pronounce it. He was in Germany for 10 months and left convinced that his pronunciation correct. I was devastated.

can you explain us germans what is the big deal with the healthcare is the usa ? by drchaos2000in germany

[–]guysguy 0 points1 point ago*

The CPB in the US gets its funding from the US government. Instead of charging individual people or households, they just use tax money to fund it. Not sure how it would be possible to opt out of supporting that. There's an argument to be made about the way Germany/GEZ handles things, and I'm all for a discussion about that. I just don't think it's a valid argument to say "Well, you have to pay for that and we don't" when you actually have no way of not paying for it in the end.

That is not true. I am not forced, though taxes, to buy government health insurance. I personally pay for (what we call) Private Health Insurance.

Why would your government not stop there? What other things are forced upon Europeans who live in a country where everyone has health insurance?

Honest question: Do you know how Healthcare works in Germany?

TIL that between the 14th and 17th centuries in Europe, people were afflicted by a dancing sickness because of which whole mobs danced uncontrollably and collapsed from exhaustion. Many died. by frozenkidain todayilearned

[–]guysguy 0 points1 point ago

The dying an collapsing part is messed up but the article makes it sound like that was an awesome thing. "Generally occurring in times of hardship"? Nowadays, people dress up as Ninjas and walk around cities destroying people's belongings. Would be way better if we just all met up in the streets and started dancing.

My wife of 5 years and I are going to give open marriage a try. Any other redditors out there have some experience in this arena? by GrammarnautZin AskReddit

[–]guysguy 1 point2 points ago

I haven't been married but I've tried this before and we failed horribly. It just didn't work out for one simple reason:

but we've laid down some very clear, mutually agreeable ground rules.

This just didn't work. Broken rules, broken hearts, broken relationship. It might work out for you guys but just because one's open minded and doesn't think too highly about rules given by the society doesn't mean this works out.

I hope your plans consist of more than just "don't bring stories into our home & don't have sex in our home".

Formula 1 car engines work differently than your average automatic car & they do not allow the transmission to do all the work. It's just not comparable to a regular car at all. I'm not sure where you got that information from.

Dylan Moran on Germany by Aschebescherin germany

[–]guysguy 13 points14 points ago*

Condescending Wonka would say something like: "Oh, you're a comedian, talking about Germany and you mention Hitler? People must like you for being so original."

Maybe it's a bit out of context and this guy actually has some good jokes. I didn't think this was funny at all. Maybe that's because of the audience he's catering to (they probably haven't heard similar jokes a thousand times).

Dear Germany: why no Paypal or credit cards? by 27pHin germany

[–]guysguy 7 points8 points ago*

I think there are many reasons for this. For one, we do have payment options that don't involve cash, we just don't use credit cards. We have something called EC (Electronic Cash) cards we can use pretty much anywhere. It's comparable to a debit card.

I'm not really sure why credit cards are not more common but I do know that you have to pay money if you want to charge someone's credit card so that's probably the reason why many don't “allow” it. I think things don't change simply because no one feels like it's necessary. You can use your EC card everywhere and that's what people do. I personally only pay cash. And then there's also an argument to be made about privacy - something that's really important to many people around here.

I've yet to experience the fax thing, though. That seems weird. PayPal has a very bad reputation; that's the main reason a friend of mine (he owns an online store) doesn't accept it. It seems like PayPal is amazing if you're buying something but horrible if you're selling goods.

Germans can't properly pronounce the word "squirrel" by d_glitteratiin videos

[–]guysguy 0 points1 point ago

Kind of funny that some people can't pronounce it correctly. I have no problem with squirrel. While we're at it; please spread the word and learn English speaking folks how to properly say "Einstein". The "st" is pronounced like in "shtick".

I'll have to find out if not being able to say squirrel is actually a thing. I have no idea why anyone would not be able to say it right.
