Are Christians really hypocritical? by gkcmanin Christianity

[–]gkcman[S] 1 point2 points ago

You make a good point - A lot of people claim to be Christians and then knowingly ignore Christian teaching. You have to wonder how honest these people are actually being with themselves if they identify with Christianity, but do not have any kind of spiritual life. In my view, it is perfectly just and right to call someone out for their sin or hypocrisy, but it is not right to consider oneself better than another on account of noticing their shortcomings (there is also the issue of tact, in how to tell someone of their error). But calling someone out should never come from a "more holy than thou" attitude, since everyone slips up.

Grad student just wondering what to do with my life, because nobody's heard that before, am I right? by magictoastersin AskReddit

[–]gkcman 0 points1 point ago

Follow your dreams, but do so within the constraints of practicality. If you are in the middle of your PhD, I'd say finish it, get a job, and try to get your institution to pay for you to pursue other forms of research. You are what, between the ages of 27 and 34, right? Just think about where you want to be in five years and make decisions accordingly. I am pursuing an M.A. right now, and had always planned to get a PhD. But, the prospect of not getting a full time job until I am in my mid- thirties turns me off. So I am going to go job hunting after this M.A.

You have to decide what is best for yourself, but remember, even though education is a good in itself, it ceases to be so if you do not use it for the good of others.

/r/christianity, I need your help. I'm really struggling with the issue of "false teachers" because I learn one thing at one church, and something totally different at another. by [deleted]in Christianity

[–]gkcman 7 points8 points ago

The best thing that you can do is look to Scripture. In Acts 17, we hear of the Bereans, who after hearing Paul and Silas preach, searched the Scriptures daily to see if what they were saying was true. Follow their example. Do not arbitrarily decide that something is "true" or "false" based on what you are feeling at that particular time. Rather, when you go to Church and hear something preached that does not seem right, look to Scripture and find out if what they are teaching is true.

The answer won't always be easy and we will never know everything about God. But don't let that make you slip into an apathetic we-can't-know-for-sure-so-let's-just-not-think-about-it attitude. The life of a Christian is one of struggle and uncertainty. But when you are the most uncertain about particularities of doctrine, let that move you to even more boldly trust in Christ as your savior.

In a similar vein, when someone comes to you asking what you believe, "always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear; 16 having a good conscience, that when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed. 17 For it is better, if it is the will of God, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil." 1 Peter 3:15b-17.

When it comes down to it, let Scripture speak on its own terms and stand in judgement over what any teacher says.

Am I the only Christian who absolutely HATES contemporary Christian music? by brtlblaykin Christianity

[–]gkcman 6 points7 points ago

The way I see it, we Christians stand in the tradition of thousands of years of Believers who used the liturgy. Why should we abandon it for the whims of culture. I mean, come on, what has culture ever really offered to the Christian church. The liturgy is our rightful birthright - a rich and valuable inheritance that communicates (and is) God's word in every aspect of it. It was Christians before us who gave us the Te Deum, the Nunc Dimittis, the Creeds, the Gloria Patri, the Venite Exultamus, and more. And come on, lets face it.... how can you compare this with this

Why is God hidden? by azorinin Christianity

[–]gkcman 1 point2 points ago

After mankind fell into sin, the first words that God said to Adam and Eve were "Where are you?" Sin is the great division that separates God and humanity, causing himself to be hidden. Prior to sin, God walked in the garden with his creation and saw that it was good . God is hidden because mankind is sinful. In Habakkuk 1:13 it says "Your eyes [God] are too pure to look on evil; you cannot tolerate wrongdoing."

And yet, God in his love humbled himself and was revealed in the person of Jesus. He took on human flesh and died to reconcile those sinners to whom, without Christ, God is hidden. Everything that we can say about God and his nature through reason alone or by scientific observation peers into God as he is hidden. But through faith in Christ, God is no longer hidden.
