With Halo 4 somewhere on the horizon, what are your thoughts on the Halo franchise as a whole?

I haven't played ODST so I did not know that. I'm just going off personal anecdotes here. To me, and to many people I know, the differences between each successive Halo game are not that big. In my opinion this differences are not as big as the differences between the various Mario games. You can go by sales records if you want; certainly I think COD suffers from the same problem of little innovation and that isn't reflected in its amazing sales. There's nothing wrong if you like the core Halo gameplay.

I guess a way to say it is: if you didn't like platforming in Super Mario Bros, I could still recommend to you Super Mario RPG, Paper Mario, Mario Kart, etc. because they are very different games. But if you did not like shooting enemies in Halo 1 I don't think I could recommend Halo: Reach because the gameplay is very similar.

Nah, that was the whole point, to not be straightforward. FF is linear enough as it is, a leveling system that actually involves the player was really nice for a change, while still allowing people to progress along a linear path if they want. Best of both worlds really.

Really? I liked it, if only for the fact that after enough leveling you could switch areas and have the dainty healer deal insane damage by smacking shit with her tiny rod. Also it let you decide whether you wanted to level normally, focus on HP increase, focus on attack, etc.

Hasn't Halo always had online multiplayer? Or maybe it was LAN only? That certainly shouldn't count. And 'open world' is pretty debatable. Horde mode is a pretty good addition though, I wasn't aware of that, I thought that was only Gears.

The point I was making with the kart racers and whatnot is that Mario has expanded from its original gameplay quite significantly, even with its original game. Halo has not. Hence why a lot of people feel bored with it.

There are differences but honestly I think they are not that significant beyond differences in gun handling and variety in weapons. Whereas within the same timespan the Mario series came out with a racing game, sports games, a party game, a RPG, etc. Not to mention the original Mario games evolved from a linear platformer to having Yoshi, crazy suits, choices in where to proceed, co-op, 2D and 3D settings. Halo is still a floaty sci-fi shooter with the same several basic weapons.

Are they that expensive? Last time I checked they were almost as expensive as American subway prices, but obviously much nicer and well run.

Sorry, if you're at all computer literate you should be able to do basic tasks in Powerpoint such as create a slide and start slideshow mode. If you can't figure out Powerpoint you shouldn't be considered computer literate no matter how many programming languages you know.

I didn't say best, I said most popular. There's really no way to determine which one is the 'best'. But I'm fairly certain FFX is the most popular FF after 7.

We'll see. Personally that's the main reason I'm not interested: Halo 4 by all accounts seems to be trying to emulate the previous Halo games closely, and I've already played those games. In comparison, by the time Mario had his 4th game (Super Mario Bros 3) the gameplay had already changed quite dramatically.

All the series you just listed have had very different iterations throughout its lifespan. I suppose the closest would be Street Fighter where the core gameplay has remained the same throughout, but then again Street Fighter has had different series with different gameplay. People are tired with Halo (and similarly with Call of Duty) because each successive game seems to do very little different gameplay-wise.

Except Halo Wars, but I was under the impression that people considered it a terrible game.

EA has some shitty practices but I definitely think gaming would be much worse off without EA. As a major corporation EA has a vested interest in making 'gaming' as big as possible and I think that attitude with MLG is good for e-sports, especially when a lot of people are still questioning how financially viable the whole e-sports thing is.

The Chinese subs are still apparently quiet enough to sneak up on US carrier groups though. Even older diesel subs are extremely quiet if run properly, and the US has said several times that the Song-class Chinese subs are pretty effective.
