I would point out that most organisms have a pH less than that of the ocean. In addition shell forming organisms have methods to remove/expel hydrogen atoms from HCO3 so as to use it in shell building. The ability to strip off a hydrogen atom and expel it to the ocean says loads about the ability of these organisms to cope with imbalances in pH.
